Damac Properties is a residential real estate development firm located in the Dubai; a city in the Middle East that many westerners are familiar with. The most influential city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been rather open to the influx of western ideas and its people. Damac owner Hussain Sajwani, who is a native of the UAE, attended the University of Washington in the U. S. and then returned to live in Dubai. He also had a keen eye and mind for good investments in equity markets and understood how to raise capital using bonds and other long term investments. With all his business experience in working with a a global company and his financial mind plus to sense of where a market would go; Hussain Sajwani went out on his own in 1982 to form his own business in the food service industry.
He started his own catering business, which seemed an unusual choice since the Hussain Sajwani family business would be considered watch making as that was his father’s business, but he made it an incredible success with operations in more than one country and a particular aspect that is very important to him; The work he did for the United States during the Iraq war. He received a plaque in appreciation of this assistance from the United States Army that is one of his most valued possessions and displayed in his office in Dubai
With the advent of Dubai opening more to the West, and at times even competing, Hussain Sajwani decided to use his business and financial experience plus all of his international ties and feeling the timing was right for a real estate boon; he created Damac Properties. However, with his travels and living in two different countries, he also realizes that fortunes can change for anyone if given a chance and in 2013 he gave well over a half million in U.S. dollars to the Ramadan Initiative. The Ramadan Initiative is a campaign with a goal of providing clothing to a million children regardless of nationality and the Hussain Sajwani single donation will provide clothing for more than 50,000 children.
