Tax-Credit and voucher Programs
Initially, Betsy was involved in providing scholarships to individual students from poor family backgrounds. However, she realized it is not a long-term solution, since it could not address the root cause of the problem. In fact, most parents sought scholarships for their kids, but only a few were selected. For that reason, Betsy was involved in charities that were advocating for tax-credits and vouchers as a way of expanding of educational choice. As an experienced politician, Betsy decided to start a political program called Great Lakes Education Project in Michigan in order to promote education reforms. From 2001 to 2002, the work of this movement was very successful, as they had expanded the number of charter schools in Michigan. Check this related article from nypost.com
